Most classes will begin the week of February 8, 2010 unless otherwise stated.

Registration will be held at the school Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or by completing and returning the bottom portion of the flyer that was sent out accompanied by a check. You may also print out the registration form and send it in with a check for the amount listed for the class. Classes will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Admiral Peary reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment and your check will be returned to you. Most classes begin at 6:00 p.m.

Computer Related Courses

Computers for Beginners

This course is an introductory level course designed to familiarize students with terminology and personal computer applications. Topics included are: a hands-on introduction to Windows operating systems, types of computers, disk drives, monitors, printers, and other devices. Also hands-on instruction working with files and directories.

Microsoft Office 2007

This course provides an overall introduction to the Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint programs and how they can be interconnected in Powerpoint presentations. This course is hands-on, providing the learner with practice to develop proficiencies in the MS Office Programs.

Introduction to AutoCad

This course is designed for students who wish to learn the basics of design and drawing using AutoCad software. Students will be introduced to fundamental drawing and design principles, such as sketching, measurement, Cartesian and polar coordinate systems, line-types and line-weights. You will learn the basics of various AutoCad funtions such as: object snap, modifiy and draw commands, grid functions, polar measurement, layer management and plotting. Assignments will be mechanical drawings, and participants in the course will complete a variety of drawing styles which include single view, orthographic multi-view, auxiliary, sectional and isometric drawings. At the conclusion of the course, 3D design and drawing will be introduced and students will have the opportunity to draw solid models of objects using extrusion techniques.

Medical Services

Nurse Aide

The Nurse Aide Program is designed to teach students the duties of a nursing assistant and how to perform these duties. Includes 82.5 hours of classroom instruction and 37.5 hours of clinical experience. Clinical experience will be conducted at a long-term care facility on the day shift. This course will also prepare the student to sit for the State Examination in order to be placed on the PA Nurse Aide Registry.

Additional cost for State Examination, uniform, physical, CPR Certification, and book.

Applicants must secure and complete Form SP4-164, PA State Police "Request for Criminal Record Check". The Criminal Record Check will be done online through Admiral Peary AVTS. You must submit a seperate non-refundable $10 check payable to Admiral Peary AVTS with registration. The background check must be completed PRIOR to the start of class.

Physical must be completed before start of class.

Admission to the Nurse Aide program is contingent upon results of the Criminal Record Check and Physical Examination.
* Physical must include 2 step Mantoux test
**(Cost does not include non-refundable $10.00 Criminal Background Check fee)

Nurse Aide Registration Deadline is January 15, 2010 to allow time for background check and physical. Classes will start February 8, 2010.

Personel Enrichment Courses

Floral Design

This course will emphasize floral design techniques using live, dried, and silk materials. Students will concentrate on developing basic skills needed for both home and special occasion arrangements. This class allows time for personal home projects.

Introduction to Digital Scrapbooking

If you have lots of digital photos on your computer and you hate to buy and get out all the scrapbook supplies, digital scrapbooking may be for you. Learn to crop and enhance your photos, add titles, journaling and apply special effects. We will use a program called Photoshop Elements to create scrapbook pages, but the basic principles can be applied to other software as well. You can add text, digital papers and elements to your pages that can be downloaded from numerous websites (many FREE). Finished scrapbook pages can be printed individually for standard scrapbooks or can be used to create professional-looking hardbound books at a cost that is very comparable to traditional scrapbooking. Bring your digital pictures on a flash drive, or CD and you can get started at the first class. Basic computer skills required.

The Joy of Drawing

      “If you’ve ever had a desire to be able to draw, this revamped class is for you."  First time students as well as advanced artists will find something to challenge and enjoy. “The Three P’s of Drawing” principles will provide the basis for the class. Demonstrations in the drawing mediums of pencil, charcoal, pen & ink and colored pencil, as well as studies in calligraphy, perspective and composition are included. Handouts will be provided, and our goal is to have drawings suitable for framing, creation of you own greeting/Christmas cards and other personalized projects completed at the end of the 10 week semester.  Class members enjoy a relaxed environment, much encouragement and pleasant comaraderie. Come Join us!

Suggested materials: a multi-purpose sketch pad, a few pencils, eraser (a kneaded eraser is also recommended) and a straight edge (ruler).

Trade And Industrial Courses

Automotive Safety Inspection -- Certification

Offered in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to certify successful completers as Safety Inspection Mechanics. Certification Categories Offered: Category I-Passenger, Category II-Motorcycles, Category III-Heavy Trucks. Students must register in person at the school and have a VALID PA Driver's license. Tuition includes written baseline test, one written category test, and one tactile test. Tactile test will be scheduled with the instructor. Additional Category /tactile test --$20.

Cabinet Making

Whether you are a beginner and choose to make bird houses or a seasoned woodworker and want to make a cabinet, this class is for you! The course is designed to allow each student to choose projects limited only by their desire, ability, and the time spent in class. Students have made everything from cutting boards to tables, furniture for the home, and doors for the house! Let your dream become a goal and reality in this class. Accomplish safety concerns using power tools and machinery, while creating a project you can be proud to say, "I made it".

Construction Electricity

This course is designed to meet the skill and knowledge required to properly wire homes and small industrial installations. The electrical code will be followed throughout the course with emphasis placed on assembly, testing, and maintenance of electrical fixtures, apparatus, and lights.

HVAC Heating/Cooling Fundamentals

This course introduces the student to basic electrical knowledge as applied to heating and refrigeration. Testing equipment and trouble-shooting are taught using wire schematics and control fundamentals. Included are basic refrigeration cycle principles, operations, refrigerant charging, evacuation and recovery procedures. Heating principles are gas and oil fired units which you will cover hook-ups and installation procedures.

Small Engine Repair

Students will be introduced to the workings of a 2 cycle and 4 cycle small engine. They will be given an introduction of carburetors, electronic and distributive ignition systems. Instruction will also train students in troubleshooting various types of engines such as weed eaters, snow blowers, lawn mowers etc. All aspects of this course will be geared towards the EETC accreditation.

Meets M & W 6-9 PM -- 60 Hrs -- $200 + Materials - $50 EETC Test optional.

Welding

A practical course in developing knowledge and skills in the following: Shielded Metal ARC Welding - all positions, Oxy-Fuel Cutting, Intro to MIG and FCAW. Emphasis will be placed on AWS structural codes.
